Visiting the holy cities on a spiritual pilgrimage is one of the ways to get forgiveness and to get the 'Qurb'e Ilahi,' i.e., closeness to Allah. Pilgrims first know the holy rites of this successful pilgrimage, regardless of whether they perform the Hajj or the Umrah. Ihram and Miqat are two of the basic ideas you will come across. They serve as the physical and spiritual entry points to your journey.

Understanding the Meaning of Ihram in Umrah and Hajj

Many people only associate Ihram with the modest Islamic clothing worn by women or the two white, seamless pieces of clothing worn by men. It is an outward form. When you don an Ihram for, you enter a state of devotion and purity. You respond to Allah's call. To perform the Hajj or Umrah, you enter in the state of Ihram. It is your garment for this divine invitation.

What Is Miqat, and Why Does It Matter Before Entering Ihram?

What is the Miqat then? Think of it as a spiritual point boundary. Before starting to perform the rituals to perform the Hajj or Umrah, you must be in the state of Ihram. Miqat is a beginning point for your rites. Our Prophet declared some points as Miqat points.

Significance is paramount. Since it breaches the pilgrimage's sanctity, crossing this Ihram boundary without first entering the state of Ihram carries a penalty (damm). So, one of the aspects of your preparation that requires your careful attention is understanding your Miqat.

For the convenience of every pilgrim, the Prophet (S.A.W.) had designated Miqat locations to enter the Haram Shareef's Hudood.

Let's see the sites of Miqat.

The Different Types of Miqat for Pilgrims Coming from Various Regions

  • For those from Madina, it's 'Masjid al Hudaibiyah' or 'Masjid Aishah.'

  • For those from Najd, it's Qarn al Manazil.

  • For those from Egypt and Syria, it's Al Juhfah.

  • For those from Yemen, it's Yalamlam.

  • For those from Iraq, it's Al Dhat Irq. This Miqat point was assigned by Umar ibn al-Khattab.

You declare your intention to perform the Hajj or Umrah at your Miqat. If you are already within these boundaries, like in Jeddah, stop at one of the above specific mosques or places before continuing.

This is a common concern of many pilgrims. If you realize that you've missed your Miqat, you must immediately stop, enter the state of Ihram, and offer a sacrifice of a sheep, goat, or share of a camel/cow in Makkah as expiation (Damm).  Allah is Gafoor ur Raheem.

2. Can women wear a regular hijab and abaya for Ihram?

Yes, women can wear their normal, modest clothes for Ihram. There’s no need for a special “Ihram set.” Your clothes or abaya should be loose and cover your body. It doesn’t have to be white.
